Web Hosting Web hosting

The service of providing storage, connectivity, and network and security services needed to publish files for a website on the Internet.

Web Hosting Shared hosting

Web Hosting where multiple clients websites are stored on and the same web server and share the resources this web server.

Domain names What is a domain name?

Domain names, such as www.a_domain.com, are easier for humans to remember than a websites IP address, so DNS servers are used to associate each website IP address with a domain name. When you type the website URL www.your_domain.com into your web browser, the browser will take you to the corresponding IP address of the web server where the website is hosted.

Domain Levels
There are different types and levels of domain names. Examples of the various levels are:
Top-level Domains (TLD) - .com, .net, .org, .edu, .info
example: www.an_example.com

Country Code Top-level Domains (ccTLD) - .ie, .uk, .us, .fr
example: www.an_example.ie

IP Address What is an IP address?

Internet Protocol Address, a series of numbers used to uniquely identify a computer or device on an internal network or the Internet using TCP/IP. It consists of a series of four numbers separated by dots (for example 121.121.121.1). Or with IPv6 an IP address consists of 8 groups of four digits (for example 2032:0be8:47a3:0610:0032:9d2e:d470:7321)

URL What is a URL?

A URL stands for Universal Resource Locator, this is a web address such as http://www.your_domain.com

Browser What is a web browser?

A web browser is a program that displays web files on your computer display. When you surf the Internet, you start by opening a web browser window, then navigating the browser to a website. examples areMozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator

SSL What is SSL?

Secured Sockets Layer, a security protocol enabling secure encrypted, authenticated communication over the Internet, an SSL certificate is issued by an issuing authority to encrypt data transmission.

FTP What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocal . FTP is a method of logging on to another computer to download or upload files. When you use FTP you enter your username and password to access to your files.

FTP What is Anonymous FTP?

Anonymous FTP is a method of using FTP to log on to another computer to download or upload files without an account on the other computer. When you log on, you enter 'anonymous' as the username and your address as the password, and you can then access publicly available files.

Backbone When a host refers to a Backbone, what do they mean?

Backbone is high-speed cable, fiber cable or series of connections that form a major path within a network such as a T-3, OC-12, or Gig-E line.

Bandwidth What is bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred over a connection in a given amount of time, with web hosting the period is generally monthly

AUP Acceptable Use Policy

A set of rules describing the activities that are permitted on a network, server, web site, e-mail or within a newsgroup.

TOS Terms of Service

A contract between you and the provider (ICCM in this case) decribing billing, services provided, our responsibilities and yours.

Bit What is a Bit?

The smallest unit of computer data. Bits can be turned to on(1) or off(0) and are used in various combinations to represent different kinds of information.

Byte What is a Byte?

KB What is a KiloByte ?

1024 bytes

MB What is a MegaByte?

1024 KiloBytes

GB What is a GigaByte?
